Week 1B, Social Media Use Today
This is a very loaded question. I
believe there are many positive and negative effects in the use of social
media. Now more than ever social media is being used for building business and
being lucrative. It is the best way to advertise yourself, the best way to stay
connected with friends and meet new people who share similar interests. The
algorithms used make it easier than ever to do so. Social media platforms are a
great way to stay up to date on a friend’s or acquaintance’s life without
having to actually call them on the phone any longer. On the other hand, social
media can have negative effects as well, such as being a constant distraction, giving
unrealistic views of other’s lives, being able to say what you want behind a
screen and not having to deal with real face-to-face consequences, lack of
verbal communication, peer pressure, bullying, eye strain, and a potential
rapid spread of false, misleading information.
Currently I am only using social
media to keep up with current events in the news, and stay somewhat informed on
political views, but I’m nowhere near engulfed in any of it. I just don’t want
to be completely clueless to the world around me. Of course, after taking this
class I would like to be more active on social media and reap the benefits of
what it has to offer.
I’m not sure which platforms are favored for
business/ news/ entertainment/ etc. However, if I took a stab at it, I would guess TikTok/Snapchat
is used most for entertainment (dancing, singing, silly random videos etc.) Instagram is maybe used more for business, networking, and staying connected
with friends, and Twitter seems to be more of an argumentative and political
platform.
